Academic Diversity Disparity
I am Chicana. I’m from San Antonio, Texas. A Hispanic city with representation across all socioeconomic levels from the Mayor to the owner of the taquería down the street.
It wasn’t until I left for college that I suddenly, and irreversibly, became a minority.
I was dropped into the Ivy League elite without as much as a calling card.
I am an outsider and I navigated my way into Academia. I had no Latinx role models to look to.
But what if there had been a Latinx role model? Would my career path have been any different? Less trial-and-error and more direct? More social capital and a bigger network?
What I think about more is: who gets left behind when there is little to no representation?
I hope this map will be used to understand and demand more representation. #actionoverwords
