New ways to train changemakers

Course Design

  • Envisioning Future Earth with SEEDS

Integrate book smarts and street smarts for examining contemporary topics like:

urban farming as resistance, financial literacy and consumerism, environmental health + justice, seventh generation principle, the long now, solarpunk, and afrofuturism

  • Ecology

Science has and continues to exclude many groups. My job is to counter this outdated group of gatekeepers by training diverse, skilled, and creative STEM students (that's you!). Our ideas are better when we include diverse perspectives. Thus, I am committed to incorporating resources respectful of diversity in all its endless forms and creating opportunities to share our diverse perspectives and lived experiences. I designed this course for science majors who will challenge the status quo.

  • Biodiversity Data Science

Although data science has disrupted and transformed scientific discovery, it has come at the cost of a widening skill gap, reflecting socioeconomic differences and determining who gets to participate in re-imagining and re-constructing future worlds. This YouTube repository of course and training materials counter that in small ways by making training available to all.

  • ecoCode

ecoCode, a data science think tank, designs open educational resources to foster practical engagement with data science. By tailoring these resources to the needs of Ecological Society of America SEEDS chapters aimed at building diversity in the discipline, ecoCode provides a supportive venue for students to come together and build community while mastering desirable skills. In addition, these resources are easily implementable and customizable so as to meet the needs of other ecology and environment student groups across the United States and beyond.
