FAQ

  • How did you establish your rates?

I’m offering deep NSF-style insights, based on 10 years of direct experience serving on multiple panels annually since 2016, across multiple NSF Divisions and Programs. This is high-value work that impacts the success of multi-hundred-thousand (and sometimes million)-dollar proposals. It includes judgment, not just proofreading, i.e., intellectual evaluation. My rates reflect this deep experience and knowledge.

The Student Boost rates of course represent a deep discount while also recognizing demands and values on my time and expertise.

  • Who are these services for?

The ideal profile of someone purchasing the Base or Deluxe packages is a tenure-track or tenured professor, especially those with start-up funding that can be used for career support.

The Student Boost package is, as the name suggests, for students. These are people who are likely paying out of pocket, and the price reflects a deep discount while still valuing my time.

  • My university requires you to be set up as a contractor, is this possible?

Certainly. Contact me at: catherine [dot] hulshof [at] gmail [dot] com for my W-9 and Scope of Work.

  • Why are you doing this?

I have long admired people who are in their element, having found what they are good at and which comes easily. Grant review is that for me. I love it and I’m good at it and it provides incredible value to others. I’m also experimenting with other forms of income (having taken major financial hits during Hurricane Maria, the pandemic, and childcare). This helps me build a rainy day fund (for my family, my research, and my grad students) in case all our grants get cancelled by evil forces.

  • Is this a consultancy service?

No. I’m not offering consulting. What I’m offering is a mock NSF panel review. You will receive a review summary as if I were reviewing your proposal as an NSF panelist.

  • Are there discounts?

No. A decade of review experience has value. My rates are designed for faculty with startup funding (so these aren’t out-of-pocket costs), and my rates are deeply discounted for students.
